The female protagonist, Selina, and her family have to leave their Pennsylvania home because of war, so they flee to Upper Canada where it is safe and where her father can find work. Selina’s grandmother cannot go with the family but she sends a quilt top she made; its different colours and designs fill Selina with memories of special family occasions.
The male protagonist, seven year-old Joey, discovers that his second hand hockey skates are magic and will grant him three wishes as long as they have to do with skating.
