In 1989 I took my first trip to Mexico. I was carrying a little Spanish phrase book and was quite taken aback with how well my attempts to communicate were received. After two more trips I decided that I would learn Spanish properly and began its study in 1996. Translation has become a way in which I can use both the language and literary skills I have acquired while gaining a greater understanding of other cultures. Translating one language to another is like crossing a swinging bridge that must be negotiated step by step with the greatest care. The mental exertion is intense but there is constantly a reward. It is better than a treasure hunt because the pot of gold is always attainable, although sometimes it takes a long time to find.
