Graduate Profile

TAN PHAN, PH.D.
Centre Alumna

Introducing Tan

A recent graduate of CSCI, Tan is now enjoying her new position as instructor of educational psychology in the Teacher Education program at San Diego State University, California. She recently made contact with the Centre after a hectic start to the term. Her new colleagues have been a tremendous help in getting her settled and Tan has been greatly impressed by their hospitality and professionalism.

Tan's dissertation, entitled "A Tapestry of Resilient Lives: Socio-Cultural Explorations of Ten Vietnamese Inner-City Youths," explored the concept of resiliency among Vietnamese students in Vancouver schools. She interviewed parents and children alike, in both English and Vietnamese. Her dissertation was a narrative work of social psychology, describing their refugee experiences, their struggle to strike roots in a new country and their dreams for their children's education.

During her Ph.D. Tan also pursued an impressive publishing and presenting schedule. Tan sends her warmest regards to all the folks at the Centre and wishes everyone well in their studies.
