Graduate Profile
Monique Giard
Ph.D. Student

Monique Giard, performer, educator, counselor,
has been at the Centre since 1999. Following an act of serendipity,
she met many angels guiding her studies along the path of inquiry.
First angel:
Karen Meyers, director of CSCI at the time.
“Karen understood my passion and promise to promote
learning in ‘firing up’ life through shape shifting.
She invited me to join the Centre and share my passion
with others.”
Monique’s second angel is Carl Leggo.
“Carl’s inspiring poetics are a delight for
the soul. With him I reclaimed my dancing voice, which led me
to performing hurt, incest, my sister’s suicide, and youth trauma.
This reclaimed performative journey led me to Lynn Fels.”
Third angel is Lynn Fels.
“Lynn is my writing mentor. She taught me to
write my hopes and desires in a way that words, feelings, images,
perform on the page as lived. Through the deconstruction of forms,
I found a theory of performing trauma, shape shifting who
we think we are into who we want to become, beyond the self. Through
writing my dissertation. I experience a completion process to
my purpose: To discover who we are not yet (Holzman, 2003)
through performance.”
