Graduate Profile
DARREN
LUND
Ph.D.
When
I think of the Centre I have wonderful memories of supportive colleagues
and office staff, interesting professors and caring relationships.
My residency from 1996-1998 seemed to be consumed with lots of seminars
and papers, and even teaching the odd class, but most gratifying
to me were the personal connections. Moving back to Alberta to do
field work and continue my high school teaching and human rights
activism has meant a balancing act. With the help of a study leave
and an IODE fellowship I'll be finishing my dissertation by next
summer. Being connected to the Centre only electronically is a bit
alienating but knowing that the people I met there are busy finishing
degrees and/or moving onto other adventures is very satisfying.
I
continue to present at conferences, publish articles when I'm not
marking English essays, and continue my research and activism on
social justice themes. I am particularly interested in studying
teacher-student coalitions that challenge racism and other discrimination
in secondary chools.
Running
recreationally is my athletic stress-relief, and I savour time spent
with my spouse, Medi, and our two children, Stefan, 8, and Tatiana,
5. They still can't get enough time with their parents, so I've
been told to enjoy that while it lasts!
I
look forward to continued contact with my friends at the Centre
and beyond, and wish everyone the best in their future endeavours,
whether they include the academy or some other space in which to
flourish.
I
feel very fortunate to have been recognized for my work with STOP
(Students and Teachers Opposing Prejudice), an ongoing action group
I formed in 1987 in Red Deer. This includes:
- 2000
Intercultural Educator of the Year Award (inaugural) from the
Intercultural and Second Languages Council of the Alberta Teachers’
Association
- 1999
Harmony Award of Distinction (inaugural, jointly with STOP) by
the Harmony Movement
- 1998
Race Relations Award (jointly with Lindsay Thurber High School)
by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities
