A
transplanted Maritimer, Bruce completed his master's at UBC in 1995
in the area of teaching Japanese as second language and is now in
his second year of doctoral studies. His interest in East Asia is
leading him to pursue a study that explores the potential of theories
of intertextuality (Kristeva, Barthes, and others) in pedagogy -
specifically, using cross-cultural autobiography and narrative in
humanities education at the intermediate level.
Following
the absorption of the newsletter and his duties by the expanding
Centre website, he has moved on to assist the team gathering information
for that challenging undertaking. He has taught in the Vancouver
School District for ten years, and looks forward to teaching at
his new school this year (returning from a leave of absence that
allowed him to immerse himself in studies at the Centre), located
on the city's east side. An avid soccer fan and aikido enthusiast,
Bruce will talk European football any time over an americano.
